USS Lexington & Texas State Aquarium

Two of Corpus Christi's biggest attractions are across the parking lot from each other on North Beach — about 40 minutes from Cinnamon Shore. The Lex is a WWII aircraft carrier turned museum. The Texas State Aquarium is the largest in Texas. Together they make the perfect rainy-day combo.

Both attractions sit on Corpus Christi's North Beach, just over the Harbor Bridge from downtown. From Cinnamon Shore the drive is about 40 minutes via the JFK Causeway and SPID. The two are walking distance from each other and share parking, which makes a one-day combo trip easy. Lots of families do exactly that.

The two attractions

USS Lexington Museum on the Bay

Allow 2–3 hours

A retired WWII aircraft carrier (CV-16) — the 'Blue Ghost' — permanently moored in Corpus Christi Bay as a museum. Five self-guided tour routes cover the flight deck (with dozens of vintage aircraft), the hangar bay, the captain's bridge, lower-deck crew quarters, and the engine room. Excellent for older kids and adults; can be a long climb for very young children.

Texas State Aquarium

Allow 3–4 hours

The largest aquarium in Texas. Headline exhibits include the Caribbean Sea (with sharks and rays), the Dolphin Bay viewing windows, the H-E-B Splash Park (a soaking wet zone for younger kids), and a substantial sea-otter habitat. Daily presentations and feedings are scheduled — pick up the day's program on arrival.

Doing both in one day

Most families start with the aquarium when it opens (usually 9:00 AM), break for lunch, then walk over to the Lexington for the afternoon. The aquarium's biggest crowds are after lunch; getting there at open buys you a quieter first hour with the dolphin and shark exhibits.

Both attractions have on-site cafés, but the food is functional, not great. If you've got time, drive 5 minutes back across the Harbor Bridge to a downtown Corpus Christi restaurant for a real lunch.

Tickets and discounts

Combo tickets covering both attractions are usually available at a meaningful discount over buying each individually — check the Lexington and Aquarium websites or buy at either ticket window. Both offer member, military, AAA, and senior discounts. Buying online in advance (especially for the aquarium during peak season) avoids line waits and locks in the lower price.

Best time to visit

Weekday mornings are quietest. Rainy days are busiest — these are the obvious pivots when the beach is out — so if your trip is a wash-out, expect company. Texas school holidays (spring break, the week of July 4, fall break, Thanksgiving, Christmas) are very busy.

Getting there from Cinnamon Shore

Drive south on TX-361 down Mustang Island, cross the JFK Causeway onto the mainland, take TX-358 / SPID west into Corpus Christi, then I-37 north and the US-181 / Harbor Bridge across the bay. The North Beach exit is signed for both attractions. Parking is shared between them — pay once and walk between the two.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to do USS Lexington and the Texas State Aquarium in one day?

Most families need 6–8 hours total — figure 3–4 hours at the aquarium and 2–3 hours on the Lexington, plus a lunch break in between. Open the aquarium at 9 AM, do the Lex in the afternoon, and you can be back at Cinnamon Shore by dinner.

How far are the USS Lexington and Texas State Aquarium from Port Aransas?

About 40 minutes by car from Cinnamon Shore. Both attractions are on North Beach in Corpus Christi, across the Harbor Bridge from downtown. They're walking distance from each other and share parking.

Are combo tickets available for both attractions?

Yes — combo tickets covering the USS Lexington and the Texas State Aquarium are usually offered at a discount over buying each separately. You can buy them at either attraction's ticket window or in advance online. Member, military, AAA, and senior discounts also apply.

What's there for young kids?

The aquarium is the better of the two for under-7s — the Splash Park (a soaking wet play zone), the otter habitat, and the dolphin viewing windows are big hits, and there's plenty of accessible space. The Lexington's flight deck has airplanes the kids can walk around but involves a lot of climbing on metal ladders down to the lower decks.

Where do you park?

Shared paid parking lots serve both attractions on North Beach — pay once and walk between the two. There's also free street parking on parts of North Beach Drive on quieter days.

Is the USS Lexington wheelchair accessible?

Partially. The flight deck and hangar bay are accessible by elevator. The lower decks (crew quarters, engine room) require steep navy ladders and are not wheelchair accessible. The Texas State Aquarium is fully accessible.

Can you eat at either attraction?

Yes — both have on-site cafés. The food is functional but not memorable. If your timing is flexible, drive 5 minutes back across the Harbor Bridge to downtown Corpus Christi for a real lunch.

Is it worth seeing both, or just one?

If you have a full day and the weather is uninspiring, do both — they pair naturally and the combo ticket is worth it. If you only have a half-day, pick by interests: the aquarium for kids under 10 and animal lovers, the Lexington for older kids, history buffs, and aviation enthusiasts.
