Port Aransas Drive-Time Calculator

How long is the drive to Cinnamon Shore in Port Aransas from Houston, Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, or the Rio Grande Valley? Curated, off-peak estimates for both arrival routes — the JFK Causeway and the free Aransas Pass ferry — plus the best and worst times to leave each city.

Drive times by origin

Off-peak, single-driver estimates including the final 20-minute leg up TX-361 from the Causeway to Cinnamon Shore. Add 15–60 minutes for Friday-afternoon or holiday-weekend conditions.

From Houston

3h 55m · 210 mi (off-peak)

Houston is the most common origin. The Mustang Island route via Corpus Christi and the JFK Causeway is the reliable way in — about four hours off-peak, longer on Friday afternoons.

Recommended route
JFK Causeway — US-59/I-69 → US-77 S → Corpus Christi → JFK Causeway → TX-361 N. Fully paved, ferry-free. The reliable arrival.
Alternate
Aransas Pass Ferry (4h + ferry wait, 200 mi) — US-59/I-69 → US-77 S → TX-35 S → Aransas Pass → Free TxDOT ferry. Slightly shorter on paper but adds the ferry wait.
Best time to leave
Saturday 6–8 a.m. — Houston is moving, traffic is light, you're at the beach by lunch.
Worst time to leave
Friday 3–7 p.m. — Houston rush hour stacks onto I-69/US-59 and adds 45–75 minutes.
Where to stop
Victoria (~halfway) and Refugio have the easiest gas + Buc-ee's-style stops. Top off in Aransas Pass if you're taking the ferry.

From Austin

3h 50m · 225 mi (off-peak)

From Austin, count on roughly 3 hours and 45 minutes via I-37 and the JFK Causeway. The SH-130 toll loop pays for itself if you're leaving during a weekday afternoon.

Recommended route
JFK Causeway — I-35 S → SH-130 → US-183 → I-37 S → Corpus Christi → JFK Causeway → TX-361 N. I-35 → I-37 is the standard line; SH-130 toll bypasses central-Austin traffic.
Alternate
Aransas Pass Ferry (3h 55m + ferry wait, 215 mi) — I-37 S → US-181 S → Aransas Pass → Free TxDOT ferry. A few miles shorter; the ferry wait is the wildcard.
Best time to leave
Saturday 7–9 a.m. — clear of Austin's I-35 morning crawl, ahead of the inbound weekend wave.
Worst time to leave
Friday 4–7 p.m. — I-35 south through San Marcos and SA can add an hour.
Where to stop
San Marcos, Buda, and especially the Buc-ee's at Luling on US-183 / I-10 if routing through Lockhart. Easy gas in CC and Aransas Pass.

From San Antonio

2h 50m · 155 mi (off-peak)

From San Antonio, this is the easiest drive on the list — a straight shot down I-37 to Corpus Christi, then the Causeway and TX-361. About two and three-quarter hours.

Recommended route
JFK Causeway — I-37 S → Corpus Christi → JFK Causeway → TX-361 N. The shortest, simplest drive. Two highways, two and a half hours.
Alternate
Aransas Pass Ferry (2h 55m + ferry wait, 145 mi) — I-37 S → US-181 S → Aransas Pass → Free TxDOT ferry. Slightly shorter and a fun arrival; check ferry status first.
Best time to leave
Almost any weekday morning — I-37 south flows even through SA's commute.
Worst time to leave
Sunday afternoons returning home (the inbound, not outbound, direction) — but that's not your problem on the way down.
Where to stop
Three Rivers and Mathis on I-37 are easy mid-trip stops. Robstown also has gas right before the Causeway turnoff.

From Dallas / Fort Worth

6h 45m · 415 mi (off-peak)

From DFW, this is a six-and-a-half to seven-hour drive on a clean day. Plan an actual lunch stop, leave early, and skip the ferry — the Causeway is the lower-variance arrival.

Recommended route
JFK Causeway — I-35 S → I-37 S → Corpus Christi → JFK Causeway → TX-361 N. I-35 splits into 35E/35W; both rejoin in Hillsboro. Long but simple.
Alternate
Aransas Pass Ferry (6h 50m + ferry wait, 405 mi) — I-35 S → I-37 S → US-181 S → Aransas Pass → Free TxDOT ferry. Negligibly shorter. After 6+ hours of driving, the ferry wait can sting.
Best time to leave
Friday 6–8 a.m. or Saturday before sunrise — you'll be on the beach by mid-afternoon.
Worst time to leave
Friday after lunch — I-35 around Waco and Austin can add 60–90 minutes.
Where to stop
The Buc-ee's at Temple, the one at New Braunfels, and the I-37 stops at Pleasanton or Three Rivers. Build in a real lunch break.

From Corpus Christi

38 min · 25 mi (off-peak)

From downtown Corpus Christi or Corpus Christi International Airport (CRP), the JFK Causeway run is roughly 35–45 minutes door to door. No ferry needed.

Recommended route
JFK Causeway — TX-358 / South Padre Island Drive E → JFK Causeway → TX-361 N. Straight line east from CC across the JFK Causeway, then north on TX-361.
Best time to leave
Anytime outside Corpus Christi rush hour (7–9 a.m. and 4–6 p.m.).
Worst time to leave
Weekday SPID rush hour and Saturday late mornings in summer.
Where to stop
Skip — fill up in CC if you need it; Port A gas is a touch pricier.

From McAllen / Rio Grande Valley

3h 5m · 165 mi (off-peak)

From the Valley, count on roughly three hours via US-77 north into Corpus Christi, then the JFK Causeway and TX-361.

Recommended route
JFK Causeway — US-281 N → US-77 N → Corpus Christi → JFK Causeway → TX-361 N. US-77 north is the spine. Easy three-hour run.
Best time to leave
Weekday mornings — US-77 is open road most of the way.
Worst time to leave
Holiday weekend afternoons northbound — US-77 inspections can slow things down.
Where to stop
Kingsville (mid-trip) and Robstown (just before the Causeway turnoff).

Causeway vs Ferry

JFK Causeway via Corpus Christi (default)

The reliable, fully-paved route. From any major Texas city you'll converge on Corpus Christi, take TX-358 (South Padre Island Drive) east, cross the John F. Kennedy Causeway onto North Padre Island, and continue north on TX-361 up Mustang Island. About 20 minutes from the Causeway to Cinnamon Shore. No ferry, no wait.

Aransas Pass Ferry (alternate from the north)

Free 24/7 TxDOT ferry across the Corpus Christi Ship Channel. Five-minute crossing, but the wait is the variable — quick off-season, 30–60 minutes on summer weekends, sometimes more on holiday Sunday afternoons (outbound). Good fun if waits are short and you're already routing through Aransas Pass; otherwise stick with the Causeway. Full ferry guide →

Departure tips that actually save time

  • Leave Friday morning, not Friday afternoon. Every major Texas metro adds 45–75 minutes of trip time between 3 and 7 p.m. on Friday. Saturday before sunrise is the local move.
  • Default to the Causeway. The Mustang Island arrival via Corpus Christi is paved, ferry-free, and lower-variance than the Aransas Pass ferry — especially on summer weekends.
  • Check ferry status before committing. If you're routing through Aransas Pass, look at the live TxDOT ferry status page first. If the wait looks long, peel off and take the Causeway from CC.
  • Top off in Aransas Pass or Robstown. Gas in Port Aransas is typically a touch more expensive than on the mainland.
  • Late-night arrivals are easy. Between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., highways are clear and the ferry runs near-empty. If your ETA is late, you'll have the easiest crossing of the day.
  • Plan a real meal stop on long drives. From DFW or far east Texas, build in lunch in Temple, Waco, or Three Rivers. You'll arrive happier and safer.

Drive-time FAQ

How are these drive times calculated?

These are curated, off-peak driving estimates based on Google Maps and Apple Maps baseline routing for each origin, plus locally observed adjustments for the JFK Causeway and Aransas Pass ferry approaches. They are intended as planning guidance — actual drive times will vary with traffic, construction, weather, and how often you stop. Use a live maps app for turn-by-turn.

Should I take the ferry or the JFK Causeway?

Default to the JFK Causeway. It's a paved, ferry-free arrival and the most reliable choice in every season. Take the Aransas Pass ferry only if you're already coming down through Aransas Pass from the north, the live ferry status is short, and you don't have an oversized rig. If it's a Friday evening or a summer/holiday weekend afternoon, choose the Causeway.

What's the worst time to drive in?

Friday afternoons in summer (especially 3–7 p.m.) and the day before a holiday weekend are the slowest. I-35 south through Austin, US-59/US-77 south of Houston, and the inbound ferry queue all back up at the same time. Leaving Friday morning or Saturday at sunrise saves a meaningful chunk of time.

How long does the Aransas Pass ferry take?

The actual crossing of the Corpus Christi Ship Channel is about five minutes. The wait in line is the variable: typically a few minutes off-season and 30–90 minutes during peak summer/holiday weekends. We add a season + day-of-week wait estimate when you choose the ferry option in the calculator. See the full ferry guide at /port-aransas-ferry for live status links.

What's the closest airport to Cinnamon Shore?

Corpus Christi International Airport (CRP) is the closest — about 35–45 minutes via the JFK Causeway. San Antonio (SAT) is about 2h 45m and Austin–Bergstrom (AUS) is about 3h 45m if you need more flight options.

Are tolls required on any of these routes?

Optional only. From Austin, the SH-130 toll bypass is recommended during weekday afternoons to skip central Austin's I-35 traffic. From Houston, you can use the Sam Houston Tollway (Beltway 8) to leave the metro faster. Neither is strictly required to reach Cinnamon Shore.

Can I drive a big RV in?

Yes — both routes accommodate RVs. Take the Causeway if you're towing or driving an oversized rig; the ferry has limited boat-by-boat clearance and can mean longer staging. Cinnamon Shore is a residential community; check parking instructions in your booking confirmation.

When can I check in?

Check-in instructions, parking guidance, and door codes for Beached Inn arrive in your email confirmation from Cinnamon Shore Vacation Rentals. Stays are fully self-guided — there's no in-person meet.
